Background
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) has served children since 1949, making it a 76-year-old institution in the region. When the current CEO joined the organization in 2015, he brought fresh eyes and discovered opportunities to strengthen operational foundations. The organization needed support with financial restructuring, compliance management across multiple jurisdictions, and process modernization. As a local affiliate of a national organization with limited internal resources, they were looking for a trusted partner who could help them optimize operations while they continued their critical mission: serving youth.
How We Did It
Conducted Complete Financial Overhaul
When MVB began working with the organization in 2015, the first priority was addressing the organization's financial operations. The team conducted a forensic deep dive into the organization's finances, identifying opportunities to restructure the chart of accounts and enhance record-keeping practices. Collaborating closely with leadership, we rebuilt the financial systems to support accurate reporting and strategic decision-making.
Restore Multijurisdiction Compliance
Representing three jurisdictions—DC, Maryland, and Virginia—meant triple the compliance requirements and triple the risk of missing critical deadlines. We streamlined their compliance management, working together to ensure the timely filing of applications and reports across all three jurisdictions. Our team also addressed outstanding items, including a federal audit filing, helping to strengthen the organization's compliance foundation and reduce risk.
Modernized Systems and Processes
Together with the organization's leadership, we worked to modernize operations from paper-based to secure, cloud-based electronic systems. This transformation happened organically over time, positioning the nonprofit for efficient operations long before remote work became necessary. By implementing electronic communication and processes early—nearly a decade before COVID-19—we helped the organization build resilience and adaptability into its operational DNA.
Built an Integrated “Offensive Line”
Rather than providing isolated services, we utilized our integrated support system where accounting, financial, corporate governance compliance, grant management and oversight, HR, and marketing teams all communicate and coordinate seamlessly—like an offensive line protecting and empowering the quarterback. This collaborative approach meant the CEO gained what felt like a full in-house CFO, HR director, and marketing team—expertise the organization could leverage without the overhead—all working together in harmony to support their mission.
Enabled Forward-Thinking Leadership
By taking ownership of present-day operations and ensuring everything ran smoothly, MVB freed the CEO to focus on the future. This enabled the kind of visionary leadership needed for a CEO and Board of Directors who understood they were stewards of a 76-year-old institution. The organization could now think strategically about the next decade while confident that current operations were secure.
The Results
Over 11 years of collaborative partnership, MVB's integrated "offensive line" transformed Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) from an organization in financial chaos to one with a solid operational foundation positioned for sustainable growth.
Where Are They Now
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) continues to thrive with MVB's ongoing support. The organization maintains compliance across all three jurisdictions, operates with modern electronic systems, and has leadership focused on strategic vision rather than day-to-day firefighting. As the nonprofit enters its eighth decade of service, it has the foundation needed to continue making a difference in children's lives for decades to come.
